In contrast with images now so often associated with Greece, Chevalier is a comedy set on a boat. A group of six men that have gone on a fishing tour are entering a competition of “The best man in general”. Any skill or physical endowment that can possibly be judged is put down in their notebooks, at the same time exposing their flaws. The prize is a ring called Chevalier, but the question is if the winner is also the most chivalrous man in this unique competition.
Athina Rachel Tsangari has a long record in producing films, among them Dogtooth, and working on projects such as the 2004 Olympic Games. She has also written and directed The Slow Business of Going (2000) and Attenberg (2010). Chevalier is her third full feature film and due to its success was chosen as the Greek contribution to the official selection of the 2017 Academy Awards.
“Tsangari’s deadpan approach to the increasingly sociopathic behaviour of the sextet is perfectly judged” The Guardian
“Tsangari doesn’t neglect the rich comic potential of this puffed-up oneupmanship… reps of shot of screwball hilarity…” Variety
“Bubbling unease” Financial Times
