Even the Rain

June 13, 20138:30pm

A film within a film. Cast & crew descend upon a Bolivian town to make a low-budget movie about Columbus in America and the original exploitation of local people, and succeed in replicating that exploitation. Things fall apart as cheaply hired extras abandon filmmaking to protect their water rights from privatisation by a multinational company (based on the actual events of the 2000  “Cochabamba Water War”). Chaos ensues.

Written by Paul Lavery (Ken Loach’s frequent collaborator) and directed by Iciar Bollain (Flowers From Another Tree, The Olive Tree), this is a film that cleverly mixes fiction and fact to highlight the persistence of past injustices and the role of art in excusing their repetition in the present.

‘Infused with poetry, passion and unlikely warmth. Washington Post. 16 major wins
