Based on Tony Hawks’ best-selling book of the same name, the main character of the film is Tony himself. Will our film hero win a drunken bet to take a fridge round the perimeter if Ireland in under a month It must be a matter of principle as the cost of the fridge turns out to be more than the 100 at stake. As we might have guessed its not a simple task and there’s plenty of misadventure, all the while meeting Irish characters of the best sort.
Directed by Ed Bye (Vicar of Dibley, My Family, Absolutely Fabulous and forthcoming film Gridiron UK) and scripted by Tony Hawks, the film features a cast that reads like an extract from the Who’s Who of British comedy.
Originally set to be taken up by Hollywood and to star Brendan Fraser (Gods and Monsters, The Mummy, Bedazzled ), after years of negotiation the project fell through. Round Ireland With a Fridge became what is likely to be a rarer thing these days following the demise of the UK Film Council a British independent film.
There are pluses and minuses to having big money behind a project on the one hand there are the big names and higher production values and on the other there’s the loss of control and lack of the distribution machinery to enable the film to be seen widely. Tony made the film with funding from friends and a crew of 30 in six weeks.
Tony Hawks takes the lead role and is joined by a stellar cast of comedians. Cambridge Film Festival.
The film is well written and witty Its balanced with good acting performances by the supporting cast. Cinema Liberated.
