WFC pays tribute to the centenary of WWI and to International Women’s Day by screening this adaptation of feminist and pacifist Vera Brittain’s landmark 1933 WWI memoir. A sterling British cast is led by Swede Alicia Vikander (A Royal Affair, Ex Machina) as Vera Brittain, in her first major English-language lead performance. First-time director Kent and star Vikander won the approval of Brittain’s daughter (former Cabinet Minister Baroness Shirley Williams), who had hitherto vetoed a film adaptation, unable to imagine anyone else matching the performance of Cheryl Campbell in the seminal 1979 BBC TV adaption.
“a restrained cinematic polish that feels wholly appropriate to its subject: it’s soberly moving … They’ve done hugely stirring justice to Brittain’s life’s work” Tim Robey, The Telegraph
“Vikander … gives an extraordinary performance as Vera: hyper-sensitive, impulsive but also courageous” Geoffrey Macnab, Independent on Sunday
