Andrew Haigh’s All of Us Strangers is a mesmerising and powerful film starring Andrew Scott as screenwriter Adam, who sparks a connection with his neighbour Harry, portrayed by Paul Mescal. The film, which adapts Taichi Yamada’s book Strangers, changes the setting from Tokyo to London, positioning Adam and Harry within an almost empty London tower block that isolates them from the otherwise bustling city. Set to an exquisite soundtrack of 1980s hits, All of Us Strangers is an unforgettable exploration of love and loneliness.
The film’s production design is worthy of praise. The film’s potent atmosphere was largely achieved by a careful selection of colour and tone and some well chosen filming locations. This included not only filming in Haigh’s childhood home, but also by using a new tower block in Stratford as the location of Adam’s flat. Haigh, who loves the city, noted that the block was perfect for evoking the feeling that Adam’s home “should be great, but the building is not embedded into London yet, and that can feel especially isolating”.
All of Us Strangers is a hypnotic and evocative film experience that draws you in and becomes more enriching on each subsequent viewing.
“It’s a remarkable achievement – a raw and potent piece of storytelling that grabs you by the heart and doesn’t let go.” Wendy Ide, The Observer
“Andrew Haigh’s mysterious, beautiful and sentimental film is a fantasy-supernatural romance about loneliness and love … The film is an enormously satisfying and affecting experience.” Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
