This is an utterly seductive animated tale of historical accuracy, set in 1940s Cuba, Las Vegas and New York. The story unfolds through flashbacks as Chico remembers a distant past when, as a young aspiring jazz pianist, he met the beautiful and exceptional singer Rita. Music and romance pull them together but, in true star-crossed lovers fashion, they have to overcome many obstacles and anguish in pursuit of both their dreams and the desire to be with one another.
Often described as reminiscent of Casablanca, this animated film exudes elegance, sensuality and passion. It models itself on the romantic epic films of the 30s and 40s yet it is timeless and unique. At times, the love story can be perceived as secondary to the real soul of the film jazz. The brilliant soundtrack by legendary Cuban pianist Bebo Valds includes the likes of Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Cole Porter, Dizzy Gillespie and Freddy Cole as well as original material. Jazz and Latin rhythms are a feature throughout the film perfectly befitting the spirit of the era.
But even though the film is largely a tribute to music, Truebas preoccupation with the prejudice and racism that jazz musicians have always had to endure is altogether apparent and in stark contrast with the glamorous side of jazz. Combining traditional hand drawn and computer-aided hand drawn animation (not CGI), this film adds up to a superb highly stylised, retro-look feast. The marked difference between the warm tones in Cuba and the coldness of New York makes for a particular and stunning signature.
This beautifully-designed 40s-set animation… is a wonderfully passionate film. Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
