Nebraska

This bittersweet, tragicomic but unsentimental road movie from a distinguished director and star at the top of their game depicts a crotchety, senile old man and his harassed son’s quest for riches in Lincoln, Nebraska. Panoramic shots in grainy black and white of the American mid-west are accompanied by an elegiac, plaintive soundtrack.

Distinguished actor Bruce Dern’s performance in particular received rave reviews from critics delighted at a return to form and an opportunity for Dern to remind us of the stellar qualities he displayed in 1960s and 70s cinema (The Great Gatsby, The King of Marvin Gardens, Silent Running, Coming Home). This is the sixth feature film from director Alexander Payne who has been attracting critical plaudits, Oscar nominations and box office success for several years, along with bringing out the best in his actors – most recently in The Descendants (George Clooney) and previously with films such as Sideways (Paul Giamatti) and About Schmidt (Jack Nicholson). The comic timing and observation shown in those films are also evident here, assisted by the screenplay from ex-comic sketch writer Bob Nelson.

“It is such a funny and tender film, with a superb performance from Dern … a beautifully made film, an extended epiphany of sadness and charm.” Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian.

“Payne’s flair for comic observation is apparent throughout … The reason the film has such an emotional kick is precisely because its style is so pared down and austere.” Geoffrey Macnab, The Independent.
