Post-screening Q&A with screenwriter Justine Waddell

Based on Virginia Woolf’s funniest novel, Night & Day is an ‘unromantic’ comedy about a passionate astronomer who does everything she can to avoid romantic love and marriage. Fun and contemporary in tone, and set during a period of advances in science and technology and a crumbling Edwardian patriarchy, the film showcases its ensemble of enjoyable performances against the ravishing backdrop of London in 1910. Virginia’s story is as relevant to today as it ever was: women balancing romantic love with careers.

“A wayward, unworldly fantasia, a four-leaf clover of a film – or even five-leaf; rather beautifully designed and photographed, flavoured with a wistful, unexpectedly Germanic kind of romanticism.” Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

“Bennett is exceptional, part open wound, part furious intensity, and Whitehall gives us his best blue-blooded buffoon yet. The ending is perfectly bittersweet.” Kevin Mahler, The Times
