Based on the famous 1951 novel by Daphne du Maurier (Rebecca, The Birds, Jamaica Inn), My Cousin Rachel tells the story of a young Englishman (Hunger Games’ Sam Claflin) who becomes involved with his older cousin’s widow, played by Rachel Weisz (who won an Oscar for her role in The Constant Gardener). Shot in England and in Italy (with locations including Bamber Gascoigne’s West Horsley Place in Surrey), it is the first cinema adaptation of the novel since the 1952 film starring Olivia de Havilland. Weisz’s performance has been highly praised by critics.
“Rachel Weisz gives De Havilland a run for her money … this saucily subversive dark romance mixes old-fashioned costumed intrigue with lustily modern psychological twists and post-Freudian thrills.” Mark Kermode, The Observer
“A welcome return [by Michell] to interesting movies … mordant and fittingly morbid British film with a superbly cast Rachel Weisz.” Ignatiy Vishnevetsky, The A.V.Club
