Chuck Chuck Baby

September 308:00pm

Post film Q&A with director Janis Pugh and producer Anne Beresford

Written and Directed by Janis Pugh, Chuck Chuck Baby is set in North Wales around Pugh’s hometown of Flint and the chicken factory where the women work. Chuck Chuck Baby balances the grime and grit of an industrial setting with light-hearted, feel-good comedy, all set to a cracking musical soundtrack.

The charm of Chuck Chuck Baby shines through the film’s joyful originality. Whilst the film does incorporate musical scenes which feature songs of the 1970s from Lesley Duncan, Janis Ian, and Neil Diamond, it is not a musical in the traditional sense. Instead, these scenes function to provide flickers of escape from the women’s dreary home lives, uniting them in moments that showcase and celebrate female friendship and community.

The film’s undeniable heart explodes from its original script which is brought to life by Chuck Chuck Baby’s outstanding cast. The cast is led by Louise Brealey (Sherlock, Such Brave Girls, Brian and Charles), who gives a moving and exemplary performance in the film. Following in the footsteps of many of British cinema’s finest gritty and comedic modern classics, Chuck Chuck Baby is a captivating tale of female friendship, love, and the important roles they play in working to overcome hardship.

“A gorgeous celebration of female camaraderie and second chances” Wendy Ide, Observer

“An absolutely enchanting British romantic drama that skirts the edge of musical fantasy whilst keeping its feet firmly on the ground” Mark Kermode, Kermode and Mayo’s Take

“There is a terrific warmth and emotional generosity to this romantic comedy-drama … a lot of inventive entertainment with quasi-musical sequences” Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
