News: 20 Years of Independent Cinema in Wimbledon

The Wimbledon Film Club this year celebrates its twentieth anniversary

The first screening of the WFC was Donnie Darko on the 27th of October 2005. Since then, we have screened 377 films.

This means that our screening of Bright Star on the 28th of this month, in association with Wimbledon Bookfest, will mark the start of our twentieth year bringing independent and classic films to the borough of Merton. Councillor Martin Whelton, Mayor of Merton, will be our guest on the night.

To celebrate, we have plans for a number of events over the 2025-26 season, including a special film-themed pub quiz and a prize draw of free memberships for next season that will be automatically open to all current and former members still on our mailing list.

Despite logistical challenges, not to mention a pandemic, and the explosion of online cinema and home-streaming, we believe there is still a strong role that film clubs like the WFC can play in bringing people together in a friendly atmosphere.

As one of our founding members says, “in a world where loneliness is on the increase and is one of our biggest public health challenges, warm and welcoming community spaces such as film clubs are more important than ever.
