News: Looking Back at Our First Season

Our first season of films kicked off in October 2005 with Donnie Darko. Between then and June 2006, when we concluded with Rabbit Proof Fence, we showed 17 films. You can click the image above to see the full list and drilldown into the detail of each of them.

The season saw us screen 10 foreign language films, 3 black & white classics, 1 animation and a variety of genres from crime thrillers to comedy.

Over the course of the 2025-26 season we will be publishing a series of reminiscences by current members and former trustees. First up, is long-time member Sue Mullen:

I can’t remember exactly when I first joined the film club but looking at the archive list of films I think it must have been in 2008 or 9. I remember hanging about in the Polka foyer, waiting to go in and squeeze myself into the child sized seats in the theatre- something I would not be able to manage today now I am eighty. I was so pleased when we moved to the congenial surroundings and comfortable seats of The Curzon – and I have been a member ever since.

In my youth I loved going to see European and foreign language films at the Academy cinema in Oxford Street (long since sadly closed) and I’m so glad to have seen so many wonderful classic and foreign films over the years at Wimbledon Film Club. Long may you continue.
