A gripping drama that’s winning audiences’ hearts around the world. Writer/director Hamoud has earned a lot of respect with her first feature film which packs a punch and entertains. In Between presents the lives of three young Palestinian women sharing a flat in Israel and living independent lives. The friends tread the delicate line between observing a traditional sense of the role of women in Palestinian society and being the women they each choose to be. There’s the professional woman, the Dj and the traditional woman preparing for marriage: you can judge for yourself whether the film gives a simple girl-power message or something deeper.
Hamoud is a feminist activist and In Between shows the freedom that Palestinian women can achieve and the challenges of seeking that independence. The director and her three stars now contend with social media death threats and live under a fatwa.
‘Hamoud’s clever, nuanced screenplay offers a critique of traditional, patriarchal Palestinian society, threatened by modernity, feminine power, and the court of public opinion. While the entire cast aces, the three leads, and the chemistry among them, are especially fine; they poignantly convey the sense of living “in between”.’ Alissa Simon, Variety
